Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are natural-looking prosthetic teeth that are placed directly into your jaw to permanently replace missing adult teeth. Dental implants consist of a titanium post, a crown, and an abutment.

The post acts as a root, both holding the rest of the implant in place and stimulating healthy bone growth in your jaw, just like natural tooth roots do.

The crown is the visible part of the implant and is custom-crafted to match the rest of your remaining teeth for a natural appearance. The abutment connects the post to the crown.

How are dental implants placed?

Dr. McPhillips installs dental implants in several steps. During your initial visit, he takes X-rays and uses i-CAT digital imaging technology for the most accurate imaging to determine whether your jaw is strong enough to support an implant. If necessary, he begins your implant process by performing a bone graft to your jaw to strengthen it.

When Dr. McPhillips is satisfied with the integrity of your jaw, he surgically implants the titanium post. Over the next several months, the post bonds with your jawbone — in a process called osseointegration — to form a secure base for the rest of the implant.

After your post has bonded with your jawbone and your gums have healed, Dr. McPhillips places the abutments and takes casts and images of your implant site and surrounding teeth. These images and molds are used to custom-make your crown.

Finally, when your crown is ready, Dr. McPhillips installs your crown and checks your bite and fit.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants look and act just like natural teeth. Not only do you have a beautiful and natural-looking smile, but the implant also serves as a natural tooth, keeping your jaw healthy and holding your remaining natural teeth in their correct positions.

Many patients find dental implants easier to get used to than dentures or other tooth replacement options. You don’t need to worry about taking them out or dealing with messy adhesives or special cleaning routines. You can eat and chew normally, and implants don’t affect your speech.

It’s easy to take care of dental implants. You simply brush and floss them with your other teeth. Dental implants are resistant to decay, but you still need to have regular dental check-ups so your dentist can monitor your other teeth and ensure your gums and jaw are healthy.
